The Coffee

Dominated by sugar cane combined with green apple, it serves as the perfect starter of the day. This is the perfect light-roasted coffee for those who usually drink medium or dark roasted coffee.

The Producer

Triyono manages the cooperative, guiding members in processing and roasting their own coffee. They have a fully equipped roasting facility, complete with a cupping lab, adjacent to the dry mill. Remarkably, the cooperative was only established in mid-2017.

Sumatra's farms are generally small, averaging between 0.5 to 2.5 hectares. Coffee is typically the main cash crop, but many farmers also intercrop with vegetables, potatoes, and fruit, which significantly contribute to their families' diets.

Besides cultivating coffee, many smallholder farmers work as laborers on nearby tea plantations. Tea is another major crop in the region, and larger tea plantations are often located near coffee farms. After the coffee harvest, farmers frequently find work picking tea leaves under contract.

Increasingly, Sumatra's farmers are organizing into cooperatives. Previously, individual farmers struggled to secure fair prices for their coffee cherries or parchment. By forming cooperatives, they can pool resources, access training, and negotiate better prices collectively.

The Terroir

The Koerintji Barokah Bersama Cooperative consists of 320 members who live and farm on a plateau at the base of Mount Kerinci on Sumatra island. Mount Kerinci, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, is among the 452 volcanoes in this 40,000-kilometer horseshoe-shaped zone characterized by frequent eruptions and tectonic activity. The historic eruptions of Mount Kerinci have endowed the area with fertile volcanic soil, making it lush and green.
